Two physicians call in the same week. The first says “we need a consultant to look at our marketing”. Twenty minutes later it is clear the marketing is fine and the website is slow, hard to find and hides the phone number. The second says “can you audit our website?”. Twenty minutes later it is clear the website is the least of it: three vendors, two overlapping subscriptions, a Google profile nobody owns, and no way to tell what any of it produces.

The first physician needs an audit. The second needs consulting. Choosing the wrong one costs either money or time, so this article lays out what each is, what each delivers, and how to tell which question you are actually asking.

Two different questions

A website audit answers…

  • What is wrong with my website?
  • What is it costing me in patients?
  • What should I fix first, and how?
  • Should I repair it or rebuild it?

Digital consulting answers…

  • Where does my practice stand online, as a whole?
  • Which of the things I pay for actually work?
  • What should I build next, and what should I ignore?
  • What is the plan for the next twelve months?

The audit is narrow and deep: one website, every area that determines whether it brings in patients, ranked by impact. Consulting is wide: the website is one item among the search presence, the local listings, the directories, the vendors, the spend and the market you compete in.

What each one delivers

The audit

  • A review of your site across five areas: first impression and trust, mobile speed and technical health, search visibility and local listings, patient conversion, and content accuracy.
  • A comparison with the practices you compete with in your area.
  • A plain-language report ranked by impact, with a specific fix for every issue.
  • A call to walk through it. The report is yours whether or not you work with us.

Consulting

  • A review of the whole footprint: website, search presence, listings, directories and profiles, examined together.
  • Specialty and market context: how the practices competing for your patients present themselves, and where the open ground is.
  • A vendor and platform sanity check: what earns its fee, what is redundant, what a smaller setup would look like.
  • A prioritized roadmap in writing, ranked by impact against effort, plus a walkthrough call. Also yours to keep.

A useful rule: if you can name the problem in one sentence and the sentence contains the word “website”, start with the audit. If the sentence contains the words “vendors”, “spending” or “I do not know what is working”, that is consulting.

Signs you need the audit

  • The site was built years ago and nobody has looked at it since.
  • You do not appear when you search your specialty and your city.
  • The site is slow on a phone, or the phone number is hard to tap.
  • You are deciding whether to redesign and want an honest opinion before spending.
  • A vendor is proposing a rebuild and you want a second opinion that has no stake in the answer.

Signs you need consulting

  • You pay several vendors and cannot say what each one produces.
  • You inherited a patchwork: an old site, a newer landing page, a directory subscription, an ads account someone set up once.
  • You are planning a significant digital investment and want a plan before the spend.
  • You are a group or a medical organization with more than one location or audience.
  • Marketing spend has gone up and patient volume has not.

Cost and time, honestly

Website audit

$197one time, launch price

  • Five areas, ranked by impact
  • Compared with local competitors
  • Report and call within five business days
  • Credited in full if we do the work

Digital consulting

Quotedin writing, after intake

  • Whole footprint, market and vendors
  • Strategy roadmap for the year
  • Walkthrough call
  • Audit fees credited

The audit takes a minute to request and arrives within five business days. Consulting starts with a short intake and a written quote; the timeline depends on the size of the footprint. Neither requires you to implement anything with us.

When in doubt, start smaller

If you are unsure, the audit is the honest first step, for three reasons. It is inexpensive. It often answers the question by itself. And when it does not, it becomes the first chapter of the consulting work, with its fee credited, rather than a detour. The one case where we say start with consulting is when the website is clearly not the problem: the vendors, the spend and the plan are.

Do

  • Name the problem in one sentence before choosing
  • Start with the audit when the sentence is about the website
  • Ask for the deliverable in writing, and keep it
  • Measure before and after, whichever you choose

Don’t

  • Buy consulting to learn that your site is slow
  • Buy an audit when the site is the least of your problems
  • Accept a “free consultation” that is a sales call
  • Rebuild before anyone has diagnosed

The bottom line

Audit for the website, consulting for the whole picture, and the smaller one first when you are not sure. Request the medical website audit if the question is your site; read what healthcare digital consulting covers if the question is wider; or tell us where it hurts and we will point you to the right one, including the free scan when that is all you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a website audit and digital consulting?

An audit examines one thing, your website, and delivers a prioritized list of what is wrong and how to fix it. Consulting examines your whole digital footprint (site, search presence, listings, vendors, spending, market) and delivers a strategy roadmap. The audit answers “what is wrong with my site”; consulting answers “what should I do next, and what should I stop paying for”.

How much does each cost?

Our audit is a one-time $197 launch price, credited in full toward any project within 12 months. Consulting is scoped and quoted in writing after a short intake, because a solo practice and a multi-location group are different engagements. Audit fees you have already paid are credited against consulting too.

Can I start with the audit and move to consulting later?

Yes, and that is the most common path. The audit often answers the question on its own. When it reveals that the website is only part of the problem, the audit becomes the first chapter of the consulting work rather than a wasted step.

Do I have to implement the recommendations with you?

No. Both deliverables are written so that any competent team can execute them, and both are yours to keep. If you ask us to build, that is a separate written quote, and what you paid for the audit is credited.
